Privacy notice
Version 2026-10-02. Atmos1 is being tested, so this notice is short and may change. If it changes, we will ask you to read it again.
Who we are
Atmos1 is made by DyslexicAid. DyslexicAid is run by Jamie Briggs in the United Kingdom. We decide how your information is used, and we look after it.
To contact us, write to us at jamie.briggs.2023@uni.strath.ac.uk.
What we keep
- Your email address, and your password in a scrambled form. We cannot read your password.
- Your plan, and when you agreed to our terms.
- Each computer you sign in on: what kind it is, its system version and the Atmos1 version.
- How many words you dictate and read each week. Only the number, never the words.
- Usage and error events. For example: "a dictation finished, it took 2 seconds, 14 words". They never hold your words.
- The state of each computer. For example: which speech engine it uses and whether a permission is turned on.
- A problem report, if you choose to send one. It holds the words you type into it.
- Your account may also hold a tester group name and private notes written by the Atmos1 team. These are included if you ask for a copy of your data.
What we never keep
- What you dictate.
- What Atmos1 reads aloud to you, the text you select, or pictures of your screen.
There are only two exceptions. Audio you send for cloud dictation passes through our site while it is turned into text. And the words in a problem report you choose to send reach us.
Cloud dictation
Atmos1 uses cloud dictation unless you choose to dictate on your computer in Atmos1's settings. With cloud dictation, your recording goes through this site to Groq, Inc. in the USA. Groq turns it into text and sends the text back. Our site does not keep the audio or the text. Groq processes it and is set to keep nothing.
For each cloud dictation we record how long the recording was, which model was used, whether it worked, how long it took and when. Never the words. These cloud dictation records are kept until your account is deleted.
If a cloud dictation fails, the recording is held in memory on your computer for a few seconds so you can press Try again, and is then discarded. It is never saved to disk.
When you choose to dictate on your computer (the setting is called On this Mac on a Mac and On this computer on Windows), no audio leaves your computer. Atmos1 then sends us only your account and usage information. Reading aloud always happens on your computer.
Voices
Atmos1 reads aloud in the voices on your computer. They are the voices that come with Windows or your Mac, and, on Windows, natural voices that you choose to download. All of them run on your computer. The words you read are never sent anywhere to be spoken.
When you download a natural voice, Atmos1 asks Hugging Face, the website that stores the voice files, for that one file. Hugging Face can see your internet address and which voice you asked for. It does not see anything you read or say. Nothing is downloaded until you press Download.
Why we use it
- To run your account and give you Atmos1. This is our contract with you.
- Usage and error events help us find and fix faults while Atmos1 is tested. This is our legitimate interest. They are always on, and they never hold your words.
Who else handles it
- Hostinger, which runs the computers this site lives on.
- Google, which delivers our emails to you. It sees your email address and the email.
- Groq, only for cloud dictation, as above.
- Hugging Face, Inc. in the USA, only when you download a natural voice, as above.
We never sell your information. We never use it for adverts.
How long we keep it
- Usage and error events: 90 days.
- Your account, word counts, cloud dictation records, devices and problem reports: until your account is deleted.
When your account is deleted, all of it is deleted with it.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR) you can ask us:
- for a copy of what we keep about you,
- to correct it,
- to delete your account and everything with it,
- to stop using it in a way you object to.
Write to Jamie at jamie.briggs.2023@uni.strath.ac.uk. We will answer within one month.
If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
